Fibre Technology: how it changes from the Palaeolithic to the Viking Age
“If you want to understand the material culture of any particular point in time you have to first look at where the techniques and traditions started. Join experimental archaeologist Sally Pointer as we trace the ways in which cordage, braiding, weaving and looping developed across time from the very earliest evidence in prehistory, through to the forms found in the Viking Age.”

In this workshop, I will teach you the Viking Age techniques to make your own garnment.”
Introduction to Sprang with Sally Pointer - Saturday 4th April 2026 - 10:00 - 700 NOK
“Sprang is a technique of braiding on stretched threads that can be traced back into the Neolithic and which remains in use in most time periods. It creates stretchy, flexible fabric that is particularly suited to bags, caps, headbands and more. During this workshop you will set up a simple frame and learn how to set up and braid interlinked sprang in bright cotton yarn. Most people go home with several sample pieces and a small bag or the start of a hairnet.”
